Cancer Fighter.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Melanie Ebig Lawson, beloved wife, daughter, sister, aunt and friend died Wednesday, August 6, 2025 at the age of 48.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Melanie Jo was born on April 13, 1977 in Saginaw, Michigan to Joy (Natali) and Joseph Ebig. Proud big sister to Meredith, Natalie and Nathan, Melanie was known for reading at the age of three and using her introverted powers for good and mischief. A childhood spent drinking from the Warwick Street garden hose and keeping cool in the custom-crafted teenage hideaway she shared with Meredith was highlighted by books, music, singing, service, doodling, Care Bears, and questioning authority. As a teenager, the family were fortunately reconnected with a fifth sibling, Josephine (Eikholt) Sutton, who Melanie and the family welcomed and cherish.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A 1995 graduate of Nouvel Catholic Central High School, Melanie went on to pursue degrees at Eastern Michigan University (EMU), and was proud to be a first generation college graduate. In 1999, she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Women’s Studies, English Language &amp;amp; Literature and Music. Returning for a graduate assistantship in Apartments and Family Housing, Melanie set another family milestone and proudly earned a Master of Arts in Counseling in 2003.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;While at EMU, Melanie met the love of her life, Robert Allen Lawson. They were wed at the Michigan Renaissance Festival on September 13, 2003, a tribute to their shared love of dragons, bag pipes, merriment and pushing traditional boundaries to craft their family on their terms.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Melanie and Rob were home wherever they lived and traveled together, criss-crossing the Midwest and New England as Melanie started her career in residence life at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In 2007, they became honorary residents of the East Coast when Melanie accepted a new position at the University of Connecticut. There they met their lifelong friends, chosen family, and partners in wanderlust, Sheila and Adam Morgansmith.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Massachusetts was the next place Melanie called home, rising to Interim Director of Mount Holyoke College. During this time, Melanie reached peak Geek status, selected as an Omeganaut for PAX East in 2012. The experience brought out Melanie’s hidden extrovert and supplied a perfect icebreaker spoiler. Any game of “two truths and a lie” included this truth–she did shake her money maker in front of 3,000 people to “Milkshake.” In the years to come, she was dubbed PAXmom, reminding the younger generations to shower, hydrate and eat at least one “real” meal per day with fellow PAX Enforcer Sheila.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Despite her love of the stoic, direct and sarcastic New England vibes, family ultimately called Melanie to “repatriate” to the Midwest, bringing her within driving distance of holidays, soccer tournaments, school musicals, and laughter to tears around the dining room table. The Birthday Song was always better with Melanie harmonizing.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Manchester University in North Manchester, Indiana was the next step in Melanie’s career and the site of the Lawson Weyr, a house filled with love, craft supplies, plants, and of course, cats. At Manchester, Melanie served as Director of Residential Life and pioneered a new varsity eSports program.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;During a regular eye exam, doctors first discovered melanoma in Melanie’s eye, and she battled that cancer with the help of a radioactive plate she regularly joked would give her superpowers. COVID shutdowns of student housing cut short her next career adventure at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and she eventually found her final career stop at Indiana University-Indianapolis, where she served as the Associate Director of Housing Operations. Her team there supported her through the infuriating return of cancer, this time as Stage IV metastatic melanoma diagnosed in 2022.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Years of immunotherapy, radiation and chemotherapy became part of Melanie’s routine. Despite her progressive illness and constant treatments, she demonstrated the grit and determination passed down from generations of women in her family, continuing to work full time, care for 6 (+/- a few) cats, serve candy to hundreds of North Wayne Street trick-or-treaters, crochet countless fun and functional pieces, take #LawsonMorgansmith adventures, attend as many concerts as she could manage, play World of Warcraft and Dungeons &amp;amp; Dragons, enjoy Diet Coke frequently and a gin &amp;amp; tonic occasionally, and love on her people so hard that it hurts.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Melanie was a delight. She shared her intellect and creativity freely with others, constantly mastering a new skill or topic. Her natural curiosity and “additional questions” fed a life full of art, whimsy and adventure, but don’t be fooled. Beneath that yarn and washi tape was a sharp tongue and a deep understanding of social consciousness. Her commitment to fight injustice wherever she could crush it was omnipresent. Melanie’s fight was quiet, but ferocious, until the very end.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Melanie was preceded in death by her niece and nephew, Helen and Gerald Lewis; aunt Cynthia Natali; grandparents Dolores and Louis Natali and Bertha and Floyd Ebig; and several beloved family, friends, students and pets. Her family draws comfort knowing she was reunited with Misty, Boston, Runa, Oscara, Zola and Persephone; Grandma Natali has her “sidekick” again; and they are assured Grandma Ebig hit her in the arm three times before they made pizzelles together.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Melanie is survived by her loving husband Rob Lawson;  parents, Joe “Pap” and Joy “Gram” Ebig; siblings Meredith and Jerry Lewis, Natalie and David Scott, Nathan Ebig and LaRissa Head, Josephine Sutton, Ron and Caroline Lawson; and her beloved nieces and nephews Charlee and Carrie Lawson; Elliott Scott; Annie Lawson; Rosa Joy Scott; Joseph “Joey” Lewis; Dolores “DeeDee” and Agatha “Aggie” Ebig; and oh so many uncles, aunts, cousins, co-workers, mentees, and friends, both online and IRL.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Family and friends will gather to celebrate, remember and honor Melanie on Friday, September 26 at the Michigan Renaissance Festival in Holly, Michigan. A ceremony will be held at 1PM at the wedding gazebo.
