The Tupolev Tu-160 (NATO reporting name Blackjack) is the largest and heaviest combat aircraft ever flown and the fastest bomber in service. Designed by the Tupolev Design Bureau in the 1970s as the Soviet Union's long-range nuclear-missile carrier, it first flew on 18 December 1981 and entered Soviet service in 1987.

Its maximum speed is about Mach 2.05, over 2,000 km/h, which makes it the fastest bomber in service. Four Kuznetsov NK-32 afterburning turbofans provide the thrust (GlobalSecurity Tu-160).

Around 36 airframes were completed before Soviet-era production stopped in 1992. Russia restarted the line in upgraded Tu-160M form, with the first new-build flying on 12 January 2022.

How many Tu-160s were built?

It carries cruise missiles on two internal rotary launchers — twelve Kh-55SM, or the longer-ranged Kh-101/Kh-102, with six per drum. It can also carry conventional and nuclear free-fall bombs, with a maximum load of about 40,000 kg.

What missiles does the Tu-160 carry?

Yes. Its first strikes were over Syria in November 2015, when Russia's defense ministry reported Tu-160s firing Kh-101 and Kh-555 weapons from the Mediterranean. It was later used to launch Kh-101 missiles in the war in Ukraine from 2022.
