The Story So Far: Brandon Williams 

An in-depth look into the career of our latest recruit, Brandon Williams…Born in Manchester on 3 September 2004, Brandon Paul Brian Williams grew up in the Harpurhey area and joined boyhood club Manchester United at seven years old. Progressing through the club’s prestigious academy, his first Under-18s appearance came in May 2017 as a substitute in the final stages of the Under-18 Premier League at home to Blackburn Rovers.
The 2017/18 season saw Williams feature 22 times for United’s youth teams, playing three games in the UEFA Youth League and 19 times for their Under-18s, recording four assists. Registering his first assists in back-to-back victories over Wolves and Middlesbrough, the left-back recorded two assists in a 4-1 victory over Everton in February 2018.
The second year of his scholarship saw Williams captain the Under-18s, scoring his first goal on opening day in a 3-3 draw against Derby County. Netting in victories over West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City in the Under-18 Premier League, the defender recorded three assists in the final four league games, featuring a total of 18 times for United’s Under-18 team.
Recording assists in UEFA Youth League group games against Young Boys, featuring six times in total, Williams also made his Under-21s debut during the 2018/19 season, starting in Premier League 2 fixtures against Southampton and Norwich City, as well as being named in the travelling squad for the first team for the UEFA Champions League encounter against Paris Saint-Germain.

The following month saw Williams make both his UEFA Europa League and Premier League debuts, coming against AZ Alkmaar and Liverpool respectively.
Featuring five times for the Under-21s, recording five assists, the defender scored his first senior goal in the top flight in a frantic 3-3 draw away at Sheffield United in just his fourth league outing. In his breakout campaign, he played 36 games for the first team under Ole Gunnar Solskjær, recording two assists and scoring once.
In August 2020, Williams penned a new four-year deal with United. His chances were limited with the first team, playing just 14 times in all competitions. Two of those appearances came in the UEFA Champions League in group fixtures against İstanbul Başakşehir and RB Leipzig. Despite not qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League, the 24-year-old played four times in their run to the UEFA Europa League final, where he was an unused substitute in the penalty shootout defeat against Villarreal.

Making his Canaries debut five days later in a narrow 2-1 home loss against Leicester City in the Premier League, the defender’s only goal contribution for Norwich came in a 2-1 win over Everton in January 2022, setting up the eventual winner for Adam Idah.
After playing 29 times for Norwich, Williams returned to Manchester United for the 2022/23 season, playing four times in Premier League 2 and once in the EFL Cup against Burnley, a competition the Red Devils went on to win by beating Newcastle United in the 2023 final.
The following campaign was the 24-year-old’s most recent, joining Ipswich Town on loan for the 2023/24 season. Making his Ipswich debut from the substitutes’ bench in a frantic 4-3 loss against Leeds United, the defender scored both his Ipswich goals in the Sky Bet Championship in a 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town and a 4-2 win over Preston North End two games later. In total, he played 17 times for Ipswich, with his last appearance coming in December 2023 against QPR, prior to his first trial game for the Tigers against Sunderland.

His first cap for the Under-20s came in the Elite League in September 2019 at Shrewsbury Town’s New Meadow, playing the full 90 minutes in a goalless draw against the Netherlands. The next three caps all came in the Elite League, starting all three group games against Switzerland, Italy and the Czech Republic.
A year after featuring for the Under-20s, Williams earned his one and only cap for England Under-21s in October 2020 under Aidy Boothroyd. The left-back played the full fixture in a 3-3 draw against Andorra in the Estadi Nacional, before being an unused substitute six days later against Türkiye.
