Three years after revamping the original AirPods, Apple gave its iconic open-fit (think sans silicone ear tips) buds another thorough refresh last week. Launched alongside the iPhone 16 family and the Apple Watch Series 10, the fourth-generation AirPods bring a host of design and hardware upgrades over the third generation. The notable highlights include fresh design, improved hardware and ergonomics, and next-level audio performance with — impressively — optional active noise cancelation, which brings the total price to $179.The ability to suppress pesky ambient noise I mentioned above is a first for Apple AirPods that don’t have a Pro moniker. And for those who liked the no-frills simplicity of the previous generations, the AirPods 4 version that lacks noise cancelation is more affordable ($130).After attending the Apple launch event in Cupertino, I spent almost a week alternating between both fourth-generation models as my go-to wireless earbuds. Based on my first-hand experience with every AirPod over the years, my impression is that 2024 is a generation of value for the default Apple earbuds, given the spec advancements and agreeable prices. Here’s a breakdown of the latest Apple earphones’ design, comfort, and everyday performance.AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 NC at a GlanceTop-notch sound with optional noise cancelationLightweight and comfortableUp to 5 hours of battery lifeIP54 water- and dust-resistant (earphones and case)Audio Performance: A Nice ImprovementThe Sound Is More BalancedOver the past week, the latest AirPods treated me to top-notch sound, where powerful bass, harmonious mid-range, and vibrant treble existed in discernible harmony. The sonic experience was enjoyable regardless of the content I played, and — as is the case with all AirPods —I didn’t have to fiddle with additional settings to adjust it to my liking.Compared to the outgoing third-generation AirPods, the follow-up affords more detail-rich listening. Its updated architecture, in tandem with a custom audio driver and the Apple H2 chip, results in a noticeably more detailed sound than that of the AirPods 3. The older iteration delivers heavier bass, which, while undeniably entertaining, overwhelms the mid-range and treble.Spatial Audio with optional dynamic head tracking has been a standout feature on the AirPods 3 and Pro, and the latest open-fit installment of Apple’s earphones rocks it too. Adding the handy functionality to the entry-level AirPods 4 is a big deal because the product is the spiritual successor to the entry-level AirPods, which didn’t have spatial audio capabilities. Enabling both spatial audio modes resulted in a more immersive listening experience across the board — from music and video content to FaceTime calls. As usual, I liked enabling the head-tracking feature for live recordings and some podcasts. It made me feel like I was part of the audience.Noise Cancelation Is Good But Still Can’t Match Full In-Ear BudsThe higher-end AirPods 4 NC did a stellar job in keeping the ambient noise down during a cross-country flight, at my large open office, and on New York City’s streets and subway. The experience was excellent for a set of earbuds with an open fit but not quite on the same level as the silence generated by the AirPods Pro and other high-end buds with silicone ear tips. These tiny bits provide an additional layer of passive noise isolation, which is instrumental in achieving top-tier noise cancelation.A go-to mode for my AirPods Pro, the adaptive noise control feature of the AirPods 4 NC was a standout during my testing. The former seamlessly adjusted the ambient noise cancelation based on my surroundings. At the same time, conversation awareness made quick chats at work or on the move easier by pausing audio playback and noise cancelation upon detecting my voice. The AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 NC performed superbly during calls on all platforms — from telephone and FaceTime to Microsoft Teams and Zoom. Participants heard me clearly even when I tuned in from loud indoor and outdoor spaces. Changing the earbuds connection from an iPhone to an iPad to a MacBook was also seamless. Design and Comfort: Minor, Meaningful Tweaks (Mostly to the Case)With a stem design and a glossy white finish, the AirPods 4 are instantly recognizable as Apple earphones, as expected. The housing has a slightly different shape and vents layout than the AirPods 3, but it’s hard to tell the two products apart at a glance. The buds’ charging case, however, is smaller and easier to distinguish from the one that comes with the third generation, especially on the NC model. That version has built-in loudspeaker vents sitting alongside its USB-C port.Thanks to the similar weight (a tad above 4 grams per earphone) as the AirPods 3, the follow-up is ideal for prolonged use. During my testing, I spent hours wearing the AirPods 4 and the AirPods 4 NC, running through a full battery charge on a few occasions. Their design sans ear tips is a major contributor to the comfort. Like the AirPods 3, the latest installment stayed securely in place while I put it through its paces on brisk walks, while going up and down the stairs indoors and outside, and during other common everyday scenarios.Despite their refined shape, featherweight build, and robust durability, I didn’t rely on the AirPods 4 for high-intensity workouts. The lack of ear tips made me feel like I might lose an earphone during such activities, but it’s important to note that everyone’s ears have a unique shape. I still prefer the snugger fit of the AirPods Pro for the gym.  Battery Performance: Not Great But Not BadThe 4-hour maximum battery life of the AirPods 4 with noise cancelation is behind that of many rivals but a fair tradeoff for a set of tiny buds packed with this tech and features. Turning off the essential functionality bumps up the battery endurance by an hour, bringing it on par with that of the standard AirPods 4.Because their case supports wireless and Apple Watch chargers, the AirPods 4 NC are easier to juice up than the entry-level version. The latter chargers only via USB-C. Both versions of the accessory hold several additional full charges for the earphones. The VerdictI see people rocking glossy white earbuds everywhere, so there’s probably no need to tell you that the AirPods are the best wireless earbuds for iPhone users. By getting noise cancelation and welcome case upgrades while staying the same $179 starting price, the AirPods NC 4 earphones are a worthy replacement for the solid third generation. If you’re looking to buy or gift a do-everything set of Apple-ready wireless earbuds with an open-fit design, this is, hands down, your best option.On the other hand, the standard AirPods 4 earbuds are a no-brainer upgrade over the aging AirPods 2. Their improved comfort, tougher build, and spatial audio capabilities are worth their $130 sticker. Still, if budget permits, I suggest you spend an extra $50 on the NC version for its noise-suppressing tech and feature-packed case with more charging options and AirTag-like tracking.Shop the AirPods 4 Shop the AirPods 4 NC
