AlmaOtter: A disclaimer before we get into this: My wife is a diehard Buckeyes fan. Her dad is even more so. I love both of them dearly and I have, despite my upbringing as an Illini fan, cheered for the Bucks for years now. Biases noted. Ok, on with it.&nbsp;
Ohio State and Ryan Day hiring Matt Patricia is a terrible, baffling, and idiotic decision. It will not end well.&nbsp;
Let us count the myriad of ways that this is a bad idea and he is a bad hire, in reverse order of importance.&nbsp;
- The last time Patricia coached in college was with the Syracuse Orange in 2003. He was an offensive grad assistant. He has no experience with collegiate defenses. 
- Patricia won multiple Super Bowls as a DC for Bill Belichick’s Patriots. Was he preternaturally talented as a defensive playcaller, or did he benefit from working within the system of arguably the most successful modern NFL coach and working across from an offense run by arguably the greatest NFL quarterback of all time? 
- Nick Foles and the Eagles put up 41 points and 538 yards on Patricia’s vaunted defense in the 2018 Super Bowl. Enough said.
- Belichick coaching tree hires rarely work out. See: Romeo Crennel, Charlie Weis, Eric Mangini, Josh McDaniels, Jim Schwartz, Joe Judge, Jerod Mayo, etc, etc, etc. Really, the only recent Belichick assistants that have had some success in college are Jedd Fisch with Arizona and now Washington and my favorite former but non-familial denizen of northwest Illinois, Bret Bielema. 
- When Patricia was the head coach for the Detroit Lions, he went 6-10 in 2018, 3-12-1 in 2019, and 4-7 in 2020 before being fired mid-season. Detroit has certainly had worse seasons (stares at the 0-16 2008 team), but it’s a rare occurrence for a team to root for the firing of a head coach. It’s even rarer for players to have pre-celebratory mimosas in the locker room after knowing that they would no longer be with a coach. That happened in Patricia’s FIRST season. He was such a toxic character that players were overjoyed to get away from him after just 16 games. After firing Patricia, the Lions hired Dan Campbell and have won the division twice in the past two seasons.
- Patricia returned to the Patriots in 2021 to coach their offense. Wait, you might think I meant defense, that being the side of the ball that he had coached for 20 years. No, in fact, Patricia became the offensive playcaller, their offense dropped to 15th in the league, and they got the shit kicked out of them 47-17 by the Bills in the playoffs. 
- In December 2023, the Philadelphia Eagles promoted Patricia to be their DC.  The team did not get any better, losing three of their final four games, and bowing out of the playoffs after a 32-9 loss to Tampa Bay. What happened to that defense after he left? Ah right, they just beat the crap out of Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl a few days ago.
- “On the evening of March 15, 1996, the woman told police that two men burst into the upscale hotel room where she was sleeping and took turns violently sexually assaulting her, according to court records and a news account at the time. They were arrested, charged and later indicted by a grand jury on one count of aggravated sexual assault — but they never stood trial and were not convicted. One of the indicted men was 21-year-old Matt Patricia.“
MaximumSam: I think Ryan Day really threaded the needle on finding a guy who already has a feud with the state of Michigan without having any ties to Ohio State.
But I&rsquo;ve seen disastrous hires - Kerry Coombs and Everett Withers immediately spring to mind. As long as the Bucks don&rsquo;t look hopelessly confused by basic plays, I&rsquo;ll be satisfied.
