The British street artist captivates audiences worldwide with his graffiti art, leaving his artistic mark in numerous countries. But who is Banksy really?</p>
<p>His trademark and a significant factor in his success is his anonymity. For over 20 years, the art world has been puzzling over who might be hiding behind the pseudonym. In any case, Banksy is best understood as a one-man art project.</p>
<p>His concept combines a mixture of street art with a simple yet striking visual language, guerrilla tactics, political messages, and a rejection of the art market. This fascinates and polarises the public in equal measure. However, it is undisputed that his works have significantly influenced <a title='Contemporary Painting' href='https://www.arsmundi.de/en//navigation/508c07bb1ba2407eb4209766f974e006'>21st-century painting</a> and inspired many imitators.</p>
<h2>Banksy's Career Began Around the Year 2000</h2>
<p>Given Banksy's consistently secret identity, there is also no confirmed information about his biography or artistic development. It is said that he was born in either 1973 or 1974 in Bristol, where he grew up. He is believed to have learnt the art of graffiti there and started his career as a street artist. Beyond that, little is known about him.</p>
<p>The question 'Who is Banksy?' can really only be answered through his artistic activities. The art phantom Banksy first came to public attention around the turn of the millennium. As early as 1999, he is said to have shown his works in self-organised exhibitions. In the early 2000s, he began making a name for himself with his graffiti and stencil works.</p>
<p>Over the years, his iconic works began appearing on public buildings in various countries around the world. At the same time, he occasionally participated in urban art exhibitions. He sometimes smuggled his paintings and graphics unauthorised into other artists' exhibitions. In this way, his works found their way into the <a title='Museum of Modern Art' href='https://www.arsmundi.de/en//navigation/b0029f7a44bf4a888d4870716c49e538'>MoMA in New York</a>, the Tate Modern in London, and the <a title='Louvre' href='https://www.arsmundi.de/en//navigation/d66bc508044e4a23b27a40a1849591d9'>Louvre</a> in Paris, among others. Today, such semi-legal methods would probably no longer be necessary.</p>
<h3>His Projects Range from Graffiti to Major Art Actions</h3>
<p>Banksy laid the foundation for his career with street art. For many years, he has been leaving his graffiti on house walls, murals, doors, and garages using spray paint cans and self-made stencils. He often incorporates the immediate surroundings and spatial conditions into his work.</p>
<p>Over the years, however, he has significantly expanded his range of artistic forms of expression. His portfolio now also includes works on canvas as well as <a title='Prints' href='https://www.arsmundi.de/en//navigation/2ca901f40b3f43ec930aeff6a32de376'>prints</a> and installations.</p>
<p>Banksy's visual language is often straightforward and very direct. Most of his works rely on very few visual elements, such as in</p>

In 2015, these included 'Dismaland', a parody of amusement parks, and the 'Walled Off Hotel' in Bethlehem, which criticises the British influence in the Palestinian conflict. For example, he supports Greenpeace and financed a ship for the NGO 'Sea-Watch' to rescue refugees in the Mediterranean. <p>Banksy also takes a different approach in many other areas of the art world. For example, he does not work with established galleries for the marketing of his works. Instead, he founded the 'Pest Control Office' - an agency that handles his 'paperwork'. Here - and only here - can buyers authenticate his works, get in touch with the artist, and even purchase a work of art every now and then.</p>

<h2>Who is Banksy? Three Theories About Banksy's Identity</h2>
<p>However, Banksy's real masterpiece might be the fact that he has managed to keep his identity a secret for so many years. There is very little evidence of Banksy as a private person. There is neither a confirmed name nor any photos of him.</p>
<p>The most reliable information to date comes from a 2003 interview, in which he supposedly revealed his first name as 'Robbie'. In another recorded conversation from 2005, Banksy's voice can be heard. He has reportedly been spotted a few times during his spray-painting and art campaigns - but always masked or disguised.</p>
<p>Thus, there is still no definitive information about Banksy's identity. This has led to much speculation about who might be behind the name Banksy. In recent years, three speculations have been the most persistent.</p>
<h3>Banksy's Real Name is Allegedly Robin Gunningham</h3>
<p>Robin Gunningham lives in Bristol and did not make a significant appearance in the art world until 2008. That year, the British newspaper 'The Mail on Sunday' started a rumour that Gunningham was Banksy.</p>
<p>The tabloid cited a photo allegedly showing Gunningham. In the background, stencils in Banksy's style could be recognised. In addition, the first name 'Robin' points to Banksy's supposed real name, which he mentioned in an interview in 2003.</p>
<p>Since then, Gunningham has been one of the most frequently named candidates for the 'real' Banksy - though without any certain proof. Gunningham himself has remained silent regarding the speculation.</p>
<h3>Who Is Behind Banksy? Robert Del Naja Is Rumoured to Be the 'Real' Identity</h3>
<p>In 2016, a journalist proposed another name that was allegedly Banksy's real identity: Robert Del Naja. Del Naja is one of the co-founders of the globally successful trip-hop band 'Massive Attack'. He could be Banksy's true identity, as he also hails from Bristol and has roots in the graffiti scene.</p>
<p>The most important indication, however, is the fact that works by Banksy often appeared in locations where Massive Attack had performed. His first name Robert also fits the puzzle.</p>
