¿Sabemos qué es realmente una ola de frío? Ahora, cuando en prácticamente toda España se está viviendo una situación meteorológica propia del invierno, es interesante saber qué es y cómo se origina este fenómeno. En este sentido, es importante también comprender cómo afecta el vórtice polar a las condiciones climáticas en nuestro país.


¿Qué es?
Una ola de frío es un fenómeno por el cual la temperatura del aire disminuye drásticamente como consecuencia de la invasión de una masa de aire frío. Esta situación se mantiene más de un día y puede tener una extensión de centenares o de miles de kilómetros cuadrados. En este contexto, es útil consultar cómo afecta la noche despejada, especialmente cuando se presentan temperaturas bajísimas.

¿Hay diferentes tipos?
Sí, se distinguen dos tipos:

 	Masas de aire polar (ola polar, u ola de frío polar): se forman entre los 55 y los 70 grados de altitud. Dependiendo de hacia dónde se dirijan, experimentarán unos cambios u otros. Por ejemplo, si se desplazan hacia zonas con temperaturas más calientes, se calentarán y, al hacerlo se inestabilizarán con lo cual favorecerán la formación de nubes de precipitación de tipo tormentoso; en cambio, si se dirigen hacia el océano Atlántico y Pacífico, el aire se cargará de humedad y al entrar en contacto con las aguas frescas se formarán bancos de niebla o nubes de precipitación que será débil.
 	Masas de aire ártico y antártico o siberianas: se originan en zonas próximas a los polos. Se caracterizan por sus bajas temperaturas, alta estabilidad, y bajo contenido de humedad, por lo que la nubosidad es escasa. No suelen producir fuertes nevadas a menos que pasen sobre el océano Atlántico, ya que al hacerlo se inestabilizan.

¿Cuándo se considera que una ola de frío afecta a España?
En España se han establecido los siguientes umbrales:

La temperatura debe bajar 6ºC como mínimo en 24 horas. Dependiendo de la zona, la temperatura mínima debe ser una u otra:

 	En el litoral de la península, Baleares, Ceuta y Melilla la temperatura mínima debe alcanzar un umbral de 0ºC.
 	En las zonas cuya altitud se halle entre el nivel del mar y los 200 metros, la temperatura mínima debe alcanzar un umbral entre los 0 y los -5ºC.
 	En las zonas cuya altitud se halle entre los 200 y los 800 metros, la temperatura mínima debe alcanzar un umbral entre los -5 y los -10ºC.
 	En las zonas cuyas altitud se halle entre los 800 y los 1200 metros, la temperatura mínima debe alcanzar un umbral inferior a los -10ºC.

Para altitudes superiores no se han establecido umbrales pues la población se supone que ya está acostumbrada, o bien se trata de zonas no pobladas. Este fenómeno puede estar relacionado con el  que influye en las temperaturas, un aspecto crítico para entender el fenómeno.

Medidas de protección
Para evitar problemas, es muy importante protegerse del frío usando ropa, a ser posible, térmica, pues bastará con ponerse unos pantalones, un jersey y una chaqueta antes que ponerse muchas piezas de ropa, lo cual podría resultar incómodo. Asimismo, es fundamental proteger el cuello y las manos, ya que de lo contrario podríamos acabar resfriados en menos tiempo del que pensamos. Si estamos enfermos, debemos acudir al médico y evitar salir al exterior hasta que mejoremos.

En el caso de que haya que coger el coche, hay que ver las predicciones meteorológicas así como informarse del posible uso de cadenas, sobretodo si hay que pasar o ir a zonas donde ha nevado. En situaciones de frío extremo, puede ser útil conocer los efectos del .
