Ole Miss Rebels Football

You know how I know this Egg Bowl is going to be excruciating? Its from the number of Miss. St. fans I have talked to in the last week saying what a blowout this game will be.
The Bulldogs (5-6, 1-6 SEC) are one win away from a bowl game berth, and the Rebels (10-1, 6-1 SEC) are one win away from a College Football Playoff berth. This game has had its tradition of being on Thanksgiving night as a country bloated and tipsy from a day’s festivities tunes in to watch the football version of your family’s political arguments play out on the gridiron.
But this year is different with a Black Friday 11 a.m. kickoff in Starkville that should mean a bevy of Busch Light and tomato juice cocktails in the Junction pre-game. There has been a noticeable push on social media for Ole Miss fans to try and take over Davis-Wade Stadium, wear powder blue and stick out on TV. It will be interesting to see how that plays out, but if it IS very recognizable from the kick, I think this game could be in full party mode if the Rebels score early. Tickets on StubHub have skyrocketed, and as of Wednesday morning the cheapest price to get a couple of seats in DWS was $236 in the upper level (aka redneck deck).
If you’re watching on TV however, get ready for 3-4 hours of coverage about Lane Kiffin’s decision. It is going to be discussion ad nauseum by the broadcasting team, which is unfortunate in light of the team’s accomplishments. Running back Kewan Lacy was named a Walter Camp award finalist as a sophomore and is up for best running back in the whole damn country - a first for any Ole Miss player. I am going to remain hopeful the broadcast at least has some kind of promo package for Lacy in his historic season.
Trinidad Chambliss may get some openings in the pass or run game if the Bulldogs decide to key in on Lacy specifically, and the D-II transfer from Ferris State will have the game on his shoulders in my opinion. Ole Miss’ defense is going to do what it has done all season, and it will bend but not break, it will give up some big plays, and it will be frustrating to watch. I will continue to pray for turnovers as those are the absolute jet fuel for the Rebels success, but I sure wouldn’t count on it.
Here’s the reality of this game. Georgia, Missouri and Texas A&M all beat the Bulldogs by 20 or more points, and if the Rebels are truly deserving of a home playoff game, it needs to do the same in my opinion. It probably won’t, because this is THE rivalry game that has defined heartache for both programs. It’s what drives fans on both sides to get a lot crazy this time of year.
But hell, give me a one point win, ten point win, or a 50 burger blowout in Starkville, all that matters is the 1-0 mentality the coaching staff has been preaching all season. If it is 1-0 this week, it caps off the best regular season in program history and puts Ole Miss in that highest echelon of college football with a chance to play its way to a national title. Yeah, that’s a real sentence I just got to type.
To quote Clark Griswold as we hurtle into the Christmas season, “Hallelujah, holy shit! Where’s the Tylenol?”
